Sku Addon Additional Information and Getting Started with WoW TBC
Purpose of the Guide
This guide is not a replacement for the official Sku installation guide and should be used as a companion to that guide. This will instead be a guide to help you after you’ve followed those steps and are already setup in the game. It will also provide a little extra help for getting started in case setup did not go as smoothly as planned. Please be sure to read the first steps guide in its entirety as many of the questions people have been asking about installation have been answered there if you read carefully. So let us begin.
Updating After Installation
After installing the addon one of the first things you may want to do is check for updates. This is only for people who used the starter package and not for those who installed the Sku addon directly. You can check if there are any updates by navigating to the following page.
https://duugu.github.io/Sku/
The link to update the addon will typically read like this. (Sku r25.8 link) Click on that link and the download should begin. After downloading the update just paste it into your addons folder and accept any requests to replace files.
Problems During Creation
If you have followed all the directions listed on the step-by-step guide and are still experiencing problems with creation and logging in here are some of the most common issues and solutions.
People report that after starting the game the script either does not work or immediately goes into game mode rather than starting in log-in mode. The first thing you should try is disabling the script using alt-escape and then trying to load it again while the game is already running. If this does not solve the problem your screen may have a pop-up which is blocking the addon from working. In this case again close the script using the above command and OCR your screen to remove any pop-ups. Once you do this run the script again and you should be good to go.
Oddly enough, people have also reported still getting the German voice when running the script. The only way this is happening is if when going into the wow_menu folder you have selected the wrong script file and are using the German file. Please be sure to listen carefully to the options and for English select the file for your region either EU or U.S.
Additional Addon Setup
Sku Chat
So, you’ve completed the setup instructions and are now ready to play. But one of the first things you should do is set up a few options in the Sku menu which will improve your overall experience.
First, begin by setting up your chatting options. Discord is a great resource for getting help but sometimes you can also get help directly in the game by chatting to others on the Sku channel. You can set up chatting options through the Sku Chat menu located in the Sku menu accessed with shift-f1. Right arrow into options and then enable any options you want. I generally recommend enabling all options that are for automatic reading of incoming chat. Once you do this chat will automatically be read to you as it is sent. You can also review any missed chat messages as well as system notifications by opening the chat view with shift-f2.
You can now chat with other people in your party, guild or on various channels. You can also send and receive private messages and hear them read to you as you receive them. Please look at the step-by-step guide for a comprehensive list of chat commands. In order to send a message to the Sku channel you should do the following. Open the chat by pressing enter. After you do this, you can type /skuchat followed by your message to send a message to the channel. Once you send your message you will see it appear in the chat review. You may notice that there is a number in front of your message. This number is the number corresponding to that channel. So as an example, if the number is 1 then in future you can type /1 followed by your message to send a message.
Setting Up Distance Announcements
One of the most useful features you should set up before beginning to play is distance announcements. You can find these options in the Sku menu by arrowing right into the distance menu. From here you are able to set up announcements for enemy, friendly and unknowns. You can either select a sound from the list of options or choose to have the distance read to you. This is important since not only will it allow you to check the range of enemy creatures to be sure you are in range of your skills but it also allows you to keep tabs on how far your party members are. Checking the distance of party members is essential when running in groups.
Setting Up Skill Keybinds
So, before you venture out into the world and begin to quest and kill things you probably want to know what skills are already available to you and what key is assigned. By default, your starting abilities will be set to the number row. You can view the skills and see what keys they are set to as well as changing the assigned key through the shift-f11 Keybind menu. Once you enter this menu you have a variety of action bars you can set up. The first action bar is typically where your starting abilities have been set and you can configure it by arrowing right into the menu. The first key listed there will be the number 1. The TTS should read it to you something like (button 1, berserking, racial, key 1.) Now, if you don’t want that ability set to that key just arrow right and look at the different categories you have there. You can open up each category with the right arrow. After you find a skill you want to set to that key just press enter to set it.
Getting Started Playing
Selecting a Race and Class
So, in general when selecting your race, you will want to consider what class you are interested in playing. For example, if you want to be a hunter and you want to play Hord then a Troll or an Orc is probably your best option. So, the first thing I recommend is going online and researching best race/class recommendations for the class you’re interested in playing. I’ll list a few of the common pairings below but ultimately much of this will be through personal preference.
Alliance
· Druid: Night Elf
· Hunter: Night Elf, Draenei
Mage: Gnome
Paladin: Draenei
Priest: Draenei, Human, Dwarf
Rogue: Human
Shaman: Draenei
Warlock: Gnome
Warrior: Human
Hord
· Druid: Tauren
· Hunter: Orc, Troll
· Mage: Troll
· Paladin: Blood Elf
· Priest: Troll, Undead
· Rogue: Orc, Troll, Blood Elf
· Shaman: Troll
· Warlock: Orc
· Warrior: Tauren
Suggestions for Races and Servers
In general, blind players have gravitated to the U.S. East Pagle server and are playing Hord. I should note though that according to the addon developers Alliance has been tested the most and is fully mapped. Hord still needs to have Blood Elf mapped.
Questing
Finding Your First Quest
Now that you’ve selected your race and your class, you’re ready to begin adventuring. After logging into the game and setting things up the first thing you’ll want to do is find your nearest quest giver. Begin by opening the quest menu by pressing “l.” After you open this menu you should arrow down once and locate the option that says “quest database.” From here you can arrow right until you hear the option that says “by distance.” Arrow right one final time from that option and you will be located in a list of nearby quests. Select the closest one to you by pressing enter and then continue to press enter a few times until the TTS says “following new trip, menu closed.”
Traveling To the Quest Giver
Great, now you’re on your way to your first quest. You should now be hearing a sort of loud heartbeat type sound which you need to center in order to get on your way. Once the sound is centered begin walking towards it until a bell rings. The bell is to tell you that you have reached the first waypoint on your route. At this point you will need to center the sound once again to continue. If you have trouble localizing and can’t tell if the sound is centered you can also press alt-control and the TTS should say something like “4, 10 meter.” These numbers indicate both which way you are facing in regards to your next waypoint and how far you still have to travel to reach the waypoint. In this case you are facing at the point where 4 would be on a clock face and 12 is the direction of your waypoint. You still need to travel 10 meters to get there. So, use your arrow keys to turn until that first number says 12 and then continue walking forward. You will do this until you reach the end of your route at which point the TTS will announce “arrived at destination.” Keep in mind that as you travel along with hearing a bell at each waypoint the TTS will also say something like “still 2.” This lets you know that you still have 2 remaining waypoints on your route. Another important thing to note is that as you walk the route will keep you on a safe path to your destination. If you are off by a bit though you may get stuck. You’ll know that you’re stuck and not moving forward because you’ll hear a beeping sound repeatedly play as you try to move forward. The higher the beep is the more stuck your character will be. You should try to first jump over the object in your way using space. If this does not free you though, then you can try stepping to the sides using the period and comma keys. You can also turn slightly with your arrow keys to get around the object. I always recommend checking what direction you’re facing before you start turning away from the route. You can do this by pressing the alt and shift keys. Once you know the direction you were traveling on the route begin trying to wander freely around the object and when you are no longer stuck turn back the direction you were traveling and continue on your way.
Interacting with the Quest Giver and Accepting the Quest
Once you have completed your route and arrived at the quest giver you will need to first interact with the NPC. In order to interact with an NPC, you can use two different methods. First, you can press control tab until you locate the nearby NPC you are searching for. Alternatively, you can open the chat with the enter key and type /tar NPCName. Example, if your quest giver is Bob then you would press enter, then type /tar Bob. After targeting your quest giver, you need to press the letter “G” in order to interact with them. At this point you can press the space key to quickly accept your quest or you can navigate through the menu that opens up and accept the quest.
Traveling to your Quest Target
Good job! You’ve now accepted your first quest and you’re ready to set out. So, the first thing you should do is open your quest menu and arrow right on the first option, which reads “current Quests.” You then can either select all quests to see all assigned quests or you can select the name of your current zone to see the quests you have in that zone. After you make a choice, you will see a list of quests you have accepted. In this case you should only have one quest listed. Perhaps when you accepted the quest you didn’t hear what you need to do. So, once you are on the menu item for your quest you can use shift-down arrow to read the information for the quest. After reading that information you are ready to proceed. Most likely your first quest will require you to kill a few creatures. You can begin by arrowing right into the quest and selecting the option that says “quest target.” Once you are in that option press enter on the first quest target listed there. You may only have one option if the quest only requires you to kill one type of creature. After you press enter it will bring you to the route menu. Continue to either arrow right or press enter until you are in a list of nearby creatures with that name. Something extremely important to note is that all creatures have a unique identifier to tell you what creature they are. So, for example you will hear the TTS in this list read you first the distance, then the name of the creature, the name of the zone and then the identifying number for that creature. This is extremely to know because you may have 20 or 50 boars in an area for example and this will help you identify which ones you have already walked to and killed. Remember that even after you kill a creature the route to that creature will remain in your list.
I’ve heard many people struggling with this since they will go and kill one creature then travel to the next one and kill it. But the problem is after that they just end up returning to the first one, they killed. So, take note of that unique identifier at the end of the name of the route so that you don’t keep walking back to the same dead creatures.
Killing your Target
So, you’ve made it to your target and are ready to kill it. You will need to press your tab key in order to target the enemy NPC. After you have targeted the NPC, you can press the letter “G” which we talked about earlier. This will have you interact with your target by either attacking it or walking closer to it if you are out of range. Remember those skills you set up earlier in keybinds? Well, this is your chance to use them. After the creature is dead you can loot the corpse by selecting it with the letter “H” and then pressing the letter “G” to interact. If for some reason you are unable to loot the corpse in that way you may be able to loot it by clicking in front of your feet with the numpad 7, 8 and 9 key. Each key will click a little further away from your feet. You may have to turn a little in order to loot the corpse. As a general rule though, remember that there are many creatures and wasting time trying to loot one specific boar if it fails the first time when you have 20 others to kill is probably not worth it.
Returning to the Quest Giver
So, you ventured out, you killed the creatures you had to kill and you’re ready to turn your quest in. First, be sure that the quest is complete by reading the quest information from within the “current Quest” menu we discussed earlier. If the quest has been completed it will say “completed” by the name of the quest. You can begin a route back to the quest giver by arrowing right on the name of the quest and following the same steps you did before but in this case instead of selecting “quest target” you will select “quest end.” Another way to do this if you happen to remember the name of the NPC where the quest ends is by opening the routes menu and selecting a route from there. You can access the routes menu with shift-f10. Once you open that menu press right arrow once and you should have a list of nearby routes. You can type the first 3 or 4 letters of the NPC and arrow down to find it. Once you locate it in the list press enter to begin your route and walk back to the quest giver.
Completing your Quest
Ok, so you’ve reached the quest giver and you’re ready to turn in the quest. You can interact with this NPC the same as you did when you were retrieving the quest earlier. Remember that once you have targeted and interacted with the NPC you can press space to quickly complete the quest. The only time you won’t be able to do this is if you need to select a reward. In this case navigate through the menu until you find the list of rewards and using the addon option for left click select the reward you want. A lot of players are having problems selecting a reward only to discover that they can’t use it. So, remember to choose something that your class can equip. A little online research will help you figure out what you can wear. You can also press shift-down arrow from the main game screen to read through quite a bit of information about your character including the weapons and armor types that are currently available to it. This is also coincidentally where your health and mana information are located.
General Information
Equipment Management
What if your quest had a reward? You can look at your inventory by pressing b to open the menu. You can begin browsing the options available to you by arrowing to the right and then arrowing up and down the options listed there. I’ll only note the two most important options in this menu.
First, you can arrow down twice to where it says containers. If you arrow right from there you will see a list of your available containers. Once you arrow right into one of those containers you will see a list of slots within that container and see what each slot holds. If you want to interact with the item in one of the slots you can arrow right on the item and you will see three options.
The first option is to left click the item. This is used when you want to drop and destroy an item. You first press enter on left click which places the item in your inventory. After you are holding the item, you use the left click on your mouse or the NVDA left click command to drop the item. A message will pop up asking if you wish to destroy the item. Select yes or no at that point. Another use for the left click option in the menu is to rearrange your containers. You can left click on an item and then go to a different slot and left click again to drop it there. If there is already another item in that slot the items will swap location.
The second option is to right click the item. If you select this option the item will be used. For example, food will be eaten and armor will be warn. If you are already wearing a piece of armor of the same type then the other piece will be removed and the one you right click will be worn instead.
Finally, the last option is to select an item for autoscrap. While most poor-quality items will automatically be sold at merchants you may find yourself wanting to sell other items. You can do this by going to the slot the item is located in and selecting this option.
Also, remember that most items that merchants sell aren’t worth buying. It is better to keep looting items and to get items from quests so that you can use your money to learn new skills.
Character Menu
But what if you aren’t sure if you’re actually wearing those bits of armor you selected? Well, you have the character menu available to you. You can access this menu using the letter “C.” After you open up that menu you can arrow right and you will see a list of options. Arrow down to the final option where the name of your character is. From here arrow right and you can see several bits of information. If you arrow down to items, you can then arrow right and then arrow up and down through the list of equipment slots for your character to see what is currently being worn. Remember that you can shift-down arrow on any of those pieces of equipment to see more information about the item.
Dying and Reviving
You’ve completed a quest and learned about routes but maybe you died along the way but don’t worry, it’s not forever. So, you have two options available to you after you die. The first option is to be brought back to life by the spirit healer located somewhere near you after you die. You can find the healer by targeting it with “/tar spir.” Target the healer and interact with it with “G.” The spirit healer will bring you back to life in a safe place with your equipment damaged by 25% durability and your damage and attributes affected by 75% for a duration based on your level. During levels 1 through 10 you will only experience the decrease in equipment durability. You can fix this by traveling to a nearby merchant after coming back to life and having your equipment repaired. Equipment will automatically be repaired at merchants as long as you have enough money for it. Remember that you can find NPCs from the route menu by typing in the first few letters of what you need. For example, you could open the route menu and find an armor merchant by typing arm and then travel to it to be repaired. Remember to use an identifier like armor, weapon since typing something generic like merchant may not work. You interact with the merchant the same way as any other NPC.
The second option you have available to you is to walk to your corpse and be revived where you died. This can sometimes be a dangerous option depending on where you died since creatures which killed you may still be lingering in the area. In order to do this, you will need to first open the waypoints menu with shift-f9. Waypoints are similar to routes and many new players have confused the two so here is the difference. A waypoint is not a pre-mapped route which a sighted player has walked and mapped in order to ensure that it is a safe path to the destination. Waypoints should only be used when there is no route available and even in this case the best way to walk to them is by selecting the option within the waypoint menu which says “close route.” This option will find the route with the nearest destination to your waypoint. In the case of your corpse, you will open the waypoint menu and type the word quick. You will then select quick waypoint 4 and select the “close route” option. This will give you a route that will leave you near that waypoint. From that point you can go back to the waypoint menu and type in quick again to select quick waypoint 4. You can now begin a direct path to the waypoint by choosing “select” rather than “close route.” After you walk over your corpse a menu will pop up asking you if you want to revive, if you answer yes, you will immediately be brought back to life where you died. If you for some reason walk past it and close out the menu just walk a bit away from that point and walk back to it so that the menu comes back.
Trainers and Skills
After your quest you have one or two new shiny levels. This means that you likely have new skills and abilities that are available for you to learn. Locate your nearest class trainer from within the route menu by typing in warrior for example, to see where the nearest warrior trainer is and travel to them. Once you arrive at the trainer you can interact with them as usual and arrow down through their menu to see what new skills you can learn. You can learn new skills buy pressing enter on train and then enter on the left click option. Remember to go set up your new skills from within the keybind menu using shift-f11.
General Troubleshooting
No Routes in List
Sometimes the addon is not displaying the routes in your area. The best way to fix this issue is to go to the Sku menu and then go to Sku Nav. From there you can go to data and choose to delete all route and waypoint data. After you have done this be sure that all addons are enabled by typing “/enableaddons” in the game chat. After this you can type “/reload” in order to load the data again. If this doesn’t fix your problem make sure you are not in an unmapped area of the game such as the Blood Elf starting area. Finally, if none of those options work feel free to ask on the discord channel for more assistance.
Autoloot Isn’t Working
If your autoloot doesn’t seem to be working try entering the following command into the chat window. “/script C_CVar.SetCVar("autoLootDefault” If this doesn’t work also remember that in order to loot a corpse you need to be in line of sight to it. This means that if you killed the creature but it is behind an obstacle you may not be able to loot it until you are directly in front of it.
